DUI checkpoints are designed for two purposes: one is to deter “drunk drivers” from taking their own lives (and the lives of others), and the other is to catch those who try not to be deterred.

One such checkpoint in Santa Monica, CA caught sportscaster Al Michaels doing just that.

After being stopped, the legendary sportscaster was arrested and charged with driving under the influence. He spent about five hours in police custody before he was released on his own recognizance early Saturday morning.

It turns out that Michaels’ blood alcohol level was exactly .08, the legal limit, which is why he was released on his own recognizance. Police say that he was polite and cooperative throughout the entire ordeal.

Al Michaels is expected to appear in court on June 26th.
