Most of the DUI checkpoints conducted in the Santa Clarita Valley and surrounding areas are generally held by the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department.
This time around, however, CHP officers from the Newhall area office will be conducting a DUI checkpoint in unincorporated Santa Clarita from 6:30 p.m. Friday, March 21st until 2:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 22nd.
The exact location has not been released, though according to law enforcement officials, it will be released shortly before 6:30 p.m. Friday.
Signs will be placed along the road as drivers approach the checkpoint, indicating the stop that awaits them ahead. CHP officers will work to detain each car and driver as little as possible as they explain the reason for the checkpoint.
As with the LASD, the CHP’s main purpose in conducting the checkpoint in Santa Clarita is to create awareness in the community about the seriousness of driving under the influence, and to show that law enforcement is not letting up in their crackdown on DUIs.
It isn’t typical for DUI checkpoints to net a lot of actual DUI or drug-related charges. However, law enforcement officials praise the practice for helping create safer roads for everyone involved by deterring would-be drunk drivers from getting behind the wheel.
