Ah, St. Patrick’s Day weekend, a time of year as famous for its green beer as it is for its DUI arrests. St. Patrick’s Day fell on a Thursday this year, and there were many events to be enjoyed. When St. Patty’s falls on a weekday, the festivities usually continue through the weekend; and this year is no different.

On Friday the 18th, the Post-St. Patrick’s Day LA Downtown Pub Crawl kicks off at 8 p.m. On Saturday the 19th, the St. Patty’s Beer Fest will be held at the Pig n’ Whistle from 2 pm to 2 am. And on Sunday, March 20th, many a St. Patrick’s Day reveler will likely be inside with the shutters drawn, drinking water and downing Tylenol like it’s candy.

During these vents, and straight through Sunday night, the LAPD and LASD will be on the lookout for anyone and everyone who gets behind the wheel and exhibits signs of intoxication. Police departments city-wide will be conducting saturation patrols in which extra police are deployed to the streets in the hopes of deterring would-be drunk drivers. Also, several DUI checkpoints will be conducted in high-traffic areas around the city throughout the weekend.

Friday, March 18 there will be a checkpoint at Sunset Blvd. and Michaeltorena Ave. in Silverlake. Additionally, saturation patrols will hit the areas of Devonshire Blvd. in the San Fernando Valley, South LA in the 77th Street Division, and all over Hollywood.

On Saturday, March 19th, a DUI checkpoint will be held at Central Ave and 92nd street in South Los Angeles and another one at Victory Blvd. and Woodley in Van Nuys.

No matter how lucky you feel this time of year, don’t take a chance. There’s nothing wrong with enjoying the festivities and consuming alcohol this St. Patrick’s Day, but make sure that if you do, you either have a safe ride home or another place to which you won’t be driving.

From all of us to you, have a safe and happy St. Patrick’s Day!
