Recently, SCV deputies were called to the scene of a traffic accident that reportedly involved a stolen vehicle. According to their Facebook page:

“Lock up & don’t leave cars idling to prevent ‘crimes of opportunity.’ On Thursday night, the owner of a Corvette left it unattended while idling, and an unknown suspect grabbed the opportunity to steal it.

The suspect ultimately ended up crashing the car and fleeing the scene. The incident remains an ongoing, active investigation.

Sometimes, when it’s cold outside, some may be tempted to go out to the car and start the engine to start getting it warm while they run back in the house. Don’t do it, or you may find yourself coming back to ‘no car.’

Unfortunately, the crime last night is not an isolated incident. SCV Sheriff’s detectives have reported an increase in these types of crimes, as well as a rise in theft from unlocked cars. ***LOCK YOUR DOORS***

We ask our community to remain vigilant and help protect themselves and their family members from becoming victims of theft.

Locking up is extremely important, whether it’s your vehicle, your front door, windows, or anything else. Many would-be criminals are opportunists who are just looking for the right time to make their move.

When it comes to your vehicle, make sure not to leave any valuables in plain sight, and park your car in an area that’s well lit. Thieves don’t want to get caught and are much more likely to make a move if your vehicle is shrouded in darkness.
