Orange County Sees Upsurge in Concealed Weapons Permit Applications

Orange County Sees Upsurge in Concealed Weapons Permit Applications

Six months ago, California courts relaxed the standard required for concealed weapons permits.

Previously, it was required that if an individual wished to obtain a permit allowing them to carry a concealed weapon, he or she must first provide documented justification to the County Sheriff.

Under the newly relaxed standards, though, it is now possible to obtain a concealed weapons permit simply by stating the desire to do so for the purpose of personal safety.

Due to the relaxed standards, there are now 1,640 people in Orange County that are licensed to carry concealed weapons, as opposed to the 900 who were legally able to do so before the change. That’s an increase of over 700 in 6 months, which is nearly double.

According to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, there are nearly 2,800 applications, as of the end of August, that have yet to be reviewed by the department. That brings the number of people applying for concealed weapons permits in Orange County to over 7,000, if you include those who chose to request an appointment with the Sheriff instead of filling out an application.

Currently, only Orange County is issuing new permits under the new standards. There is still one final decision pending in the 9th circuit court which will determine if the new standards stick or not. If they do, then many counties in the State may follow suit and end up issuing a lot of new concealed weapons permits to California citizens.
